History

hillspeed

the quest for sustained excellence

Hillspeed’s story is one of hard-work, unwavering commitment and success across five decades at the forefront of national motorsport. Established in 1970 by Morgan Ollerenshaw, the team began life as Hill Speed Racing for his participation in the British Saloon Car Championship – now the BTCC.

In the 1980s the team switched to single-seater action with a move into Formula Ford 2000 and during the 1990s a highly successful performance roadcar and historic car restoration arm was created.

Going on to win back-to-back ARP F3 titles in 2000 and 2001, Hillspeed then became a force in Formula Renault UK and Formula Renault BARC – winning the latter in 2010 with Alice Powell, the first ever female champion in a Formula Renault category.

Also in 2010, the team won its first championship in Ginetta Junior with current BTCC racer Tom Ingram and made it back-to-back crowns in 2011 with Seb Morris – who went on to become British GT Champion and a factory driver for Bentley.

Achieving more success in the Ginetta G55 Supercup and the BRDC Formula 4 Championship, Hillspeed returned to the world of F3 in 2016 when BRDC F4 morphed into the BRDC British Formula 3 Championship.

Sasakorn ‘Cutter’ Chaimongkol, a product of Hillspeed’s renowned driver development, became the top Rookie in British F3 in 2018 and went on to claim his maiden race victory the following year. His team-mate in 2019, Nico Varrone, also claimed his first British F3 win in the same season.

Last year, 2022, Hillspeed challenged hard for the inaugural GB4 Championship crown and became multiple race winners and consistent podium finishers. In the sister GB3 Championship, formerly BRDC British F3, Hillspeed returned to the winners’ circle.
