Silverstone GP Podium On Season Opening Weekend Helps Hallman To Second In GB4 Championship

Hillspeed racer Enzo Hallman enjoyed a strong first event of the new GB4 Championship partnered by the BRDC season at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit over the weekend, 25th/26th April, with a best finish of second place helping the Swedish driver to conclude the race meeting second in the standings.

Taking seventh position in round one, second in round two and then fifth in round three, Hallman made a pleasing start to his maiden season competing with the Markham Vale squad.

Team-mate Connor Willis was highly competitive and consistent on his GB4 debut, three top 10 results including two eighth places his reward for a very strong start to his first season racing ‘slicks and wings’. Fellow first year GB4 racer Demitri Nolan didn’t have such good fortune with two retirements, caused by contact through no fault of his own, book-ending a top 20 finish from the 29-car grid in round two.

In the GB3 Championship powered by the BRDC, there were mixed fortunes for Hillspeed’s trio of drivers. Dante Vinci claimed a best of 13th place from the last of the event’s races, while Aurelia Nobels’ bid for a hat-trick of top 15 finishes ended with a false start penalty in round three. For the luckless Peter Bouzinelos, a 16th place in race one was the highlight before two engine-related non-finishes.

GB4
Hallman originally qualified fourth for the opening round of the GB4 season, just a couple of tenths shy of pole, but an amended result to the session elevated him to third. Getting away fairly well at the start, he was held out wide on the dirty part of the track to Becketts and so dropped to sixth. Willis, from ninth on the grid, got away cleanly and although edged back a spot he soon re-took ninth.

On lap three Hallman saw a chance to challenge for fifth at Copse, but it left him open to attack and he then slipped to seventh where – following an unsuccessful bid for position on lap four – he remained to the flag. After a late race Safety Car period Willis mounted a challenge for eighth into The Loop, but a loss of momentum left him a sitting duck into Brooklands and he ultimately finished a still strong P10.

Nolan climbed well from 16th on the amended grid, gaining a place on the first tour and progressing very nicely into the top 12 by lap four. Shuffled back a spot before the Safety Car emerged, Nolan held 13th at the resumption but lost some ground after being edged wide at The Loop. Then, on the ninth and final lap, he was hit on the inside at Copse – pitching his car into the gravel and retirement.

The weather was much cooler for Sunday morning’s second round, cloudy skies, and Hallman launched well from the front-row to hold second. Behind, Willis was away well too from eighth but he had to go wide at Becketts in avoidance of a multi-car collision and was ninth when the Safety Car was called. Nolan, meanwhile, was a little boxed out at the start but still climbed to 21st from 25th.

Racing resumed on lap 4 and Hallman stayed close behind the race leader, Willis too made a very good re-start and on lap five he claimed seventh with a strong pass into Stowe. Soon after, though, the Safety Car was required again due to a couple of cars off at Luffield and red flags were flown – the end of the race with Hallman second, Willis eighth on countback and Nolan posting his first finish in 20th.

Enzo Hallman:
“It was mostly Safety Cars [in Rd2], they a little bit ruined my race. We were on scrubbed tyres and he [race winner Fred Green] had two new tyres, so I knew he would have a bit of a problem getting them in when it’s so cold. I maybe could’ve passed him, but then the Safety Car came out and he got to scrub in his tyres. I’m still happy, it’s P2.”

For round three, Willis lined-up fourth, Hallman 10th and Nolan in 16th place. Willis launched well and challenged for third, but after going wide at The Loop he dropped to ninth. Hallman pressured and on lap two passed his team-mate after a great wheel-to-wheel battle, just before red flags were flown. At the re-start Hallman was 10th on the grid, Willis 11th and Nolan in 18th position.

Midway through the opening lap, Safety Car boards appeared due to another incident. Hallman had moved into eighth and Willis into the top 10, but Nolan was forced to pit with damage after more contact. Racing resumed over one last lap and Hallman took seventh into Stowe, but after penalties for a couple of drivers the Hillspeed racer was elevated into fifth, with Willis finishing eighth.

GB3
Vinci was the quickest of the Hillspeed rookies in GB3 qualifying on Saturday morning, taking 16th on the grid for round one, and he made strong early progress by moving up into 13th by lap two. Although shuffled back a few places over the subsequent laps, he hit back strongly to climb into 14th but, on lap nine, his car ground to a halt exiting Club to signal a luckless retirement.

Bouzinelos and Nobels lined up 18th and 19th respectively, with the former actually being edged into the gravel out of Luffield at the end of lap one and so forced to recover from 22nd spot. Both raced well in some tight battles, particularly after the Safety Car intervention due to Vinci’s retirement, with Nobels charging through to a strong top 15 finish and Bouzinelos a mere 0.094s shy across the line.

Round two on Sunday morning began with terrible luck for Bouzinelos when, on only the second tour, he was forced into retirement due to engine problems. Vinci, from the seventh row of the grid, got away well to maintain position as Nobels initially slipped back from 18th outside the top 20.

Following an early Safety Car period Vinci fought hard in a tight group around the top 10, but on lap seven he lost out in the DRS zone on Hangar Straight and was compromised further at Village to slip to 17th just ahead of the progressing Nobels. After another late Safety Car there was time for one final lap, a frantic one in which Nobels carved through brilliantly to 15th while Vinci was elbowed to P19.

Vinci was determined to hit back in round three later on Sunday afternoon. Starting 15th on the grid, he gained a place on the first lap and then moved into 13th on lap seven. After a Safety Car there were three laps remaining and Vinci maintained position to the flag, under two seconds shy of the top 10.

Nobels began strongly and progressed from 19th on the grid to gain two positions on lap one, before breaking into the top 15 on the second tour to continue the momentum. Soon, though, came the news of a 10 second penalty for a false start and so she ultimately finished in 19th spot. Bouzinelos’ luckless weekend continued to be one of frustration when more engine woes meant he stopped on lap six.

Richard Ollerenshaw – Hillspeed Team Principal:
“It was a good weekend for us in GB4, Enzo performed impressively and leaving Silverstone second in the championship, with a podium in the bag, is a great start. Connor and Demitri both raced well on their debuts. Obviously Demitri had some terrible luck, being taken out of two of the three races, while Connor’s consistency was impressive to see. We have high hopes for all three as the season progresses.

“It was an exceptionally tough weekend for the GB3 squad, fraught with numerous engine issues across all three cars. Unfortunately this situation wasn’t confined to Hillspeed, all teams up and down the paddock endured multiple engine issues. This matter needs to be resolved as quickly as possible, and I’m sure the championship organisers will do precisely that.”

Next for Hillspeed will be rounds four, five and six of the GB4 Championship which will take place at Oulton Park International Circuit in Cheshire, from 23rd to 25th May. One week later, the GB3 season will resume across the weekend 30th/31st May at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.
